Everything To Know About The 2023 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid

May 11th, 2023 by

The 2023 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and its PHEV plug-in twin offer an affordable option for those looking for a hybrid SUV with all-wheel drive and decent towing capacity. With a combination of a front motor and a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, the Tucson Hybrid produces a total output of 226 horsepower, while the PHEV version boasts 261 hp, making it quicker than its gas-only counterpart. Both models come with a six-speed automatic transmission and can tow up to 2000 pounds when properly equipped. The 2023 models mostly remain the same as the previous year, except for a few standard safety features. The interior is modern and spacious, with quality materials and luxury features, while the infotainment system includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and an optional 10.3-inch screen with built-in navigation.

New Features For 2023

For the 2023 model year, the Tucson Hybrid and Tucson PHEV remain largely unchanged following a major update last year. However, all trims now come with standard features such as adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and a speed limit assist feature. Additionally, the Quartz White color option has been replaced with the Serenity White Pearl paint.

The SEL trim of the Tucson Hybrid and Tucson PHEV, priced under $40,000 (plus destination fee), is a significant offering in the plug-in hybrid SUV market. This trim level offers a desirable selection of equipment, including heated front seats and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Additionally, the SEL features a smaller 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, which retains a volume knob and is preferred by some users over the 10.25-inch touchscreen found in the Limited trim level.

Engine and Performance

The increase in performance that the hybrid Tucson offers compared to its gasoline-only version is remarkable. A turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four engine and a front motor power the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, resulting in a combined 226 horsepower in the former and 261 horses in the latter. Both models come with standard all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission. However, the acceleration is not as thrilling as the 302-hp Toyota RAV4 Prime.

According to a test conducted by Car and Driver, the loaded Limited hybrid test vehicle took 7.1 seconds to run to 60 mph. The Tucson is not a sports car, but it has confident handling, solid steering, and a comfortable ride. The best part of the Tucson driving experience is the quiet cruising speed that provides a more luxurious experience, which is rare in this affordable segment of SUVs.

Range and Charging

The Tucson PHEV and hybrid variants are equipped with a 13.8-kWh battery pack, providing an estimated all-electric driving range of 33 miles, as per the EPA. When connected to a Level 2 charging station, the onboard 7.2-kW charger can fully recharge the battery in about two hours.

Interior

The dashboard of the Tucson boasts a modern and simplistic design, featuring a digital gauge display, a push-button shifter, and a touch-sensitive control panel for the climate-control system and infotainment. Following in the footsteps of Hyundai’s Palisade SUV, Sonata, and Elantra sedans, the Tucson’s interior is thoughtfully arranged and features quality materials and luxury features. The rear seat and cargo area are both larger than the previous model, providing increased passenger comfort and practicality. The hybrid model offers ample storage space, fitting nine carry-on suitcases behind the back row, with a luggage capacity of 22 bags with the seatbacks stowed.

Entertainment

The dashboard of the Tucson features a standard 8.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An optional 10.3-inch screen with built-in navigation is available, as well as features like SiriusXM satellite radio and an upgraded Bose stereo system. Hyundai’s digital key smartphone app is also available, providing lock and unlock functions as well as remote start options.
