STMicroelectronics and Hyundai Motors Work Together In A Range-Topping Future
Sooner than later, Hyundai and Kia may get new silicon-carbide power modules targeted at advancing range.
Last week, a semiconductor firm, STMicroelectronics (ST), said in a press release that it was selected by Hyundai Motors to back its silicon-carbide power modules for electric vehicles based on the car manufacturer’s E-GMP platform, which upholds the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Genesis GV60. More E-GMPs are on the horizon, such as the Ioniq 6 sedan, Ioniq 7 SUV, and Kia EV9 SUVs.
Silicon-carbide technology allows higher operating voltages than traditional silicon semiconductors, enabling faster charging, greater energy efficiency, and advancing range. Iterations of the EV6 and Ioniq 5 have already reached 300 miles of range at their launch, so they weren’t precisely lagging in that department.
The semiconductor company that would provide its 3rd-generation Acepack Drive hardware to Hyundai Motors. Even though the production of these modules doesn’t begin until March 2023, there aren’t any specifics regarding the timeline for integrating the E-GMP vehicles. The Korean automaker hasn’t confirmed which E-GMP models will be the first to acquire the silicon-carbide power modules.
Two years ago, Hyundai introduced its E-GMP platform, offering the prospect of getting close to matching Tesla’s efficiency and range. With the addition of silicon-carbide technology, this prospect might become a reality.
The car manufacturer has already said that the Ioniq 6 sedan will overpower the Ioniq 5 SUV’s efficiency and range, owing to aerodynamic advancements and upgrades to the motor system. It will also serve as the first E-GMP model with over-the-air updates enabled for North America. It’s set to reach our shores towards the beginning of next year.
