The upcoming 2024 Hyundai Kona will include the convenience of over-the-air (OTA) updates, enabling software updates to be wirelessly transmitted, similar to a smartphone. Although this may seem like a standard feature in today’s automotive industry, considering that Tesla provides over-the-air updates with amusing add-ons such as video games and fart sound effects, Hyundai’s over-the-air updates can serve as a crucial means of adding new features and resolving issues, potentially surpassing the need for traditional mechanical repairs.
OTAs are commonly recognized as the crucial element for automakers to unlock a software-focused future. Therefore, it’s noteworthy that Hyundai has selected the modest Kona model — with a starting price of just $22,140 for the outgoing model — to introduce this OTA innovation, rendering it one of the most reasonably priced cars in the market to offer this feature as standard.
Before the Kona’s introduction to the North American market at the 2023 New York International Auto Show, Hyundai representatives confirmed that OTA software updates would provide “a convenient, upgradable experience” to Kona owners. The wireless updates will deliver new features, multimedia applications, firmware upgrades, and maps directly to the vehicle, eliminating the need for dealer visits. The latest Kona will be available in both gasoline and electric versions, with OTA updates as a standard feature for both options.
Hyundai’s decision to include OTA updates as a standard feature on the new Kona places it ahead of competitors who are still working to incorporate this technology throughout their entire lineup. While the Kona’s corporate cousins at Kia have recently introduced OTA updates for their infotainment systems across all their vehicles, the Kona offers updates that impact multiple areas of the car. This move highlights Hyundai’s commitment to innovation and customer convenience.
Hyundai Motor Group, consisting of Hyundai, Kia, and its luxury brand Genesis, aims to equip all its cars with OTA updates by 2025. Some of its vehicles already have this feature, including the Kia lineup, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 sedan to be launched this spring, and the new Kia EV9 crossover, which will debut at the New York Auto Show this week. On top of this, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata has also been updated to offer OTA updates.
The pricing for the upcoming Kona has yet to be announced by Hyundai, with the company stating that the information will be disclosed closer to the vehicle’s launch this summer. However, it has been revealed that the new Kona will offer a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a fully electric powertrain estimated by Hyundai to provide 260 miles of range, and a hybrid version available in other markets (although it is unclear if it will be sold in North America).
