The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Takes EV Performance to Thrilling New Heights
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, an eagerly anticipated electric vehicle from Hyundai’s performance division, promises to deliver an exhilarating driving experience. While the official unveiling is yet to take place, it is expected to debut soon and compete with the Kia EV6 GT and Ford Mustang Mach-E GT. With approximately 600 horsepower, a dedicated drift mode, and an N e-shift system simulating a dual-clutch transmission, the Ioniq 5 N is poised to be one of the most exciting new EVs on the market.
The release date for the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is set for after its debut at the 75th Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2023. It is likely to be available as a 2024 model before the end of the same year.
Although the price for the 2024 Ioniq 5 N has not been confirmed, it is expected to be slightly higher than the Kia EV6 GT, which starts at $61,600. Therefore, an estimated starting price of around $63,000 can be anticipated for the Ioniq 5 N in the USA.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N will feature a sporty design with N-specific enhancements such as larger wheels, red detailing, and a rear spoiler. The distinctive square daytime running lights on the standard Ioniq 5 will likely be retained. The exterior color options for the Ioniq 5 N are not yet known. Still, it is reasonable to expect signature N Performance Blue, along with other choices such as Ceramic White and Phantom Black.
Under the hood, the Ioniq 5 N will showcase Hyundai’s commitment to performance. It will be equipped with dual electric motors optimized specifically for this model. The car’s tuning draws inspiration from Hyundai’s i20 N WRC Rally 1 car, ensuring an engaging driving experience. Advanced features such as a specially tuned electronic limited-slip differential, N Torque Distribution, and the N Drift Optimizer will enhance control and allow for controlled power slides. The Ioniq 5 N is projected to have around 600 horsepower and comparable torque to the Kia EV6 GT, resulting in a rapid 0-60 mph time of approximately 3.4 seconds. Additionally, the car will feature a simulated dual-clutch transmission and generate artificial engine noise for a more engaging driving feel.
Given its focus on performance, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N may not offer exceptional range or efficiency. The Kia EV6 GT, for instance, has a range of 206 miles and a combined MPGe of 79, lower than the most efficient EV6 variant. However, the Ioniq 5 N is expected to have a larger battery capacity than the standard Ioniq 5, mitigating any significant range reduction. Rapid charging capability is another strength, supporting 350 kW DC fast charging.
The interior of the Ioniq 5 N will feature a dual-screen layout, similar to other Ioniq 5 models, combining a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen interface. It will offer convenient access to Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and navigation, potentially accompanied by a premium Bose sound system. The seats will likely have integrated headrests, and the upholstery may consist of a combination of leatherette and microsuede, complemented by metal pedals and a sportier steering wheel. Paddle shifters will be present to control the N e-shift system. The second-row spaciousness, a highlight of the Ioniq 5 range, will be retained in the N model.
In terms of safety features, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is expected to offer blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear parking sensors, pedestrian/cyclist detection, intelligent speed limit assist, highway driving assist, and smart cruise control as standard. The cargo space in the Ioniq 5 N should be generous, with 27.2 cubic feet behind the second row and 59.3 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded flat.
