The Hyundai Ioniq 6 Scores Impressive Figures For Its WLTP Range And Efficiency Ratings

Hyundai Ioniq 6 WLTP
Hyundai Motors recently revealed the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) and efficiency ratings for its impending Ioniq 6 model. This comes ahead of its release in Europe before the end of this year (in the U.S. in 2023).
According to the WLTP, the numbers are quite admirable and have ranked the battery-electric Ioniq 6 sedan as one of the most ecological mainstream electric vehicles.
The base-level rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model powered by a 53.0 kWh battery, has a WLTP range of 429 km (267 miles). At the same time, its energy consumption received an exceptional 139 Wh/km (224 Wh/mi).
Concurrently, the 77.4 kWh battery-powered RWD has a range of 614 km (382 miles), 43% more than the entry-level. For all that, its energy consumption is a bit higher (by 2.9%) at 143 Wh/km (230 Wh/mi).
Those who opt for 20-inch wheels should know that the range will experience a noticeable difference (down more than 11%) by a greater consumption (up 12%): 545 km (339 miles) and 160 Wh/km (257 Wh/mi).
The dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) model with 18″ wheels possesses a range of 583 km (362 miles), which is a decrease of 5% versus the RWD Ioniq 6 with the same 77.4 kWh battery.
The highest configuration of the Ioniq 6 is the 77.4 kWh, AWD, and 20″ wheels have the lowest figures for the WLTP range, specifically with 519 km (323 miles). It also has the highest energy consumption of 169 Wh/km (272 Wh/mi). Once again, 20″ wheels result in a 5% range decrease over 18″ wheels.
Hyundai Ioniq 6 WLTP range and efficiency
53.0 kWh battery
- RWD 18″: 429 km (267 miles) and 139 Wh/km (224 Wh/mi)
- 77.4 kWh battery
- RWD 18″: 614 km (382 miles) and 143 Wh/km (230 Wh/mi)
- RWD 20″: 545 km (339 miles) and 160 Wh/km (257 Wh/mi)
- AWD 18″: 583 km (362 miles) and 151 Wh/km (243 Wh/mi)
- AWD 20″: 519 km (323 miles) and 169 Wh/km (272 Wh/mi)
The Korean automaker underscores that the exceptional numbers in range and efficiency are directly allied to the car’s ultra-low aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.21. This might explain why the Ioniq 6 is characterized as an electrified streamliner.
The automaker asserts that the project underwent comprehensive aerodynamic design and engineering work to score one of the lowest drag coefficients in the industry.
The main design elements that have been given improvements include the active air flap, wheel air curtains, integrated rear spoiler, and wheel gap reducers.
“In particular, wheel gap reducers minimize the empty space between the front bumper and tires to improve aerodynamic performance around the wheel wells. This Hyundai invention made it possible for the electrified streamliner to provide a longer wheelbase for passengers’ riding comfort while simultaneously overcoming the aerodynamics challenges caused by its short front overhang.”
Indeed, the also Hyundai Ioniq 6 merits the utilization of the company’s dedicated architecture for the electrics or Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which was already used in the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Genesis GV60.
This is considered essential because, in addition to the long-range, the upcoming Ioniq 6 will also provide 10-80% state-of-charge (SOC) fast charging in only 18 minutes when using 800 V ultra-fast chargers. This means that this is likely the best model to choose for long-distance travel.
Jae Ho Huh, Head of the Sub-Mid Project Management Center at Hyundai Motor Company mentioned:
“From the start of IONIQ 6’s development, we set our sights on making it the leading all-electric range EV. To become the global leader in electric vehicles, we are committed to providing the best possible EV performance and ownership experience.”
Byung Hoon Min, Head of the Total Vehicle Performance Development Center at Hyundai Motor Company states:
“We put every effort into designing the most efficient car in the EV segment. Our focus on improving aerodynamics helped to achieve one of the longest all-electric range vehicles available, which will reduce customers’ EV range anxiety and help grow the segment.”
