Hyundai Reduces Charge Time With New E-Platform
Hyundai is planning on reducing the charging times of its EVs by 50 percent. As of late, the South Korean automaker has made headlines with its EV lineup with consumers heavily favoring the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. Both electric SUVs have seen increasing demand despite the overall decrease in EV demand. Hyundai has incorporated advanced technology like its Active Air Skirt technology which increases battery range and improves performance. The automaker is now looking toward new innovations that will further improve its EV lineup. This time Hyundai is planning on building a new platform for its future EVs that will reduce charging time drastically. Hyundai Eyes New E-Platform
Hyundai is planning on developing a new platform for its next-generation EVs. The South Korean automaker has seen immense success with its EV lineup. Models like the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 have made headlines due to their capability and versatility. The Ioniq 5 boasts impressive performance, especially with its high-performance 5N variant. The Ioniq 6 on the other hand boasts an impressive charge time, something many would-be EV customers consider to be an important factor. Speaking of charge times, Hyundai plans to drastically reduce the charge time for its EVs by using a new dedicated EV platform.
Hyundai will build several new platforms dedicated to its future EVs. One platform will be an eM platform designed for passenger EVs. The other will be an eS platform designed for commercial vehicles. These unique platforms will be designed with efficiency in mind. Hyundai plans to increase battery capacity and output for its future EVs riding on the new platforms. The automaker also plans to decrease charging time by at least 50 percent. While ambitious, Hyundai has the technology and capability as seen by its current lineup.
Currently, Hyundai’s 2025 Ioniq 5N takes about seven and a half hours to charge. Should Hyundai create its new e-platform, the all-electric SUV would see a charge time of four hours. To reach this metric, Hyundai plans on using LFP battery cells which handle more charge cycles and better accept consistent fast charging. In addition to improving charging speed, Hyundai’s new platform would reduce the overall strain on local power grids. The South Korean automaker plans to launch four new EVs on the new platform in the next few years. If Hyundai can manage its new e-platform, EVs may see a resurgence in demand.
