Hyundai recently unveiled new technology that will increase the performance of its electric vehicles. Called Active Air Skirt, this technology improves the automaker’s EVs by enhancing their aerodynamics thereby increasing driving range and overall performance. This technology is the latest project that Hyundai is focused on having recently implemented integrated chain technology which helps EVs combat harsh winter conditions. In prioritizing EVs, Hyundai has made significant strides compared to other automakers having introduced the latest Ioniq 5N. The automaker has also introduced new driver connectivity services. For now, we’ll take a closer look at Hyundai’s Active Air Skirt technology and see what consumers can expect.

Hyundai Unveils New EV Technology

Hyundai recently announced a new technology called Active Air Skirt (AAS) for its electric vehicles. Designed to improve aerodynamics, this new technology increases the driving range and overall performance of Hyundai’s EVs. The AAS technology works by minimizing wind resistance at higher speeds. This provides the EVs with better control and handling.

To incorporate its AAS technology, Hyundai installed it between the vehicle’s front bumper and front wheels. Essentially, the AAS works when traveling over 50 mph. It controls airflow to the lower part of the bumper adjusting when air resistance is greater than the rolling resistance. It is durable enough to withstand speeds over 124 mph thanks to its rubber material. At speeds below 43 mph, the AAS technology remains hidden only emerging when necessary.

Hyundai is working to ensure its EVs remain competitive. With so many automakers pursuing EVs, ingenuity is a high priority. The South Korean automaker has applied for a patent for its new AAS technology but it is still in the testing process. While testing its new technology, Hyundai saw a 2.8% improvement in drag reduction granting almost 4 miles of additional battery range. According to the automaker, the AAS technology will benefit EV SUVs and trucks more than sedans due to their larger stature. Given how much technology Hyundai is developing, its grip on the EV market is sure to grow. For now, we’ll be staying tuned for more information.
